Press Release: Mimi Steffen to appear at WCHS Re-Opening

"The Rural Schools of Preston Township"

Mimi Steffen has been collecting data and stories about the teachers and schools of Wayne County for about twenty years. As the amount of information grew, she was repeatedly asked to make her collection available to the public. The Rural Schools of Wayne County was published last year. This book contained none of the personal histories and stories of individual schools and teachers. Mimi dreamed of also publishing a book about each Township.

The Rural Schools of Preston Township is the first of these to be printed. It will be available for purchase and signing at the Historical Society's spring reopening on April 20, 2013 from 4-7pm. The book tells more about the schools of that township. There are also diaries written by a student and a teacher in the late nineteenth century. A few teachers, including Ruth Allen Smith and Ralph Gillow, are remembered. A very young man, whose grandparents live on the site of one of the schools, wrote about his archeological dig, as well. To learn if any of your ancestors were childhood residents of Preston Township take a look at the indexࢀ¦there may be a photo or Teacherࢀ™s Souvenir with their name in the book.

Meet local author Mimi Steffen at the Wayne County Historical Societyࢀ™s Open House this Saturday, April 20th from 4-7pm. The Historical Society is located at 810 Main Street in Honesdale, PA. For more information call 253-3240.
