The Wayne County Historical Societys "Plain Speaking" series returns this Friday, August 17, to the subject of Wayne County artist Howard D. Becker, whose paintings are currently being featured in a museum exhibit. Two previous presentations featured Becker the father and Becker the personality, and this weeks panel will discuss Howard Becker as artist.
Panelists are Juan H. Espino of Hawley, Thomas Colbert of New York City and Hawley and Charles G. Woods of Honesdale.
Tom Colbert, an Iowa native, earned a master of fine arts degree from the University of Iowa and has exhibited his paintings at galleries in New York City, Florida, Nebraska, South Dakota, New Jersey, Iowa, Hawley and Honesdale, as well as in his studio at his Hawley home. Colbert is a trustee of the Wayne County Historical Society and Chair of the Towpath to Trail Committee that is developing the society's historic property at Lock 31.
Charles G. Woods, a Chicago native, holds degrees in philosophy and religion and is an award-winning architect as well as a prolific painter. A local resident for more than twenty-five years, his paintings have been shown at more than fifteen art shows in the last five years. He is an art critic for a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre newspaper. His work is currently on display at Grand Style Framing Co. Gallery in Honesdale.
Juan H. Espino is a native of Mexico who has lived in Wayne County since 1988. Well-known for his colorful paintings of local scenes as well as his interpretation of national and international events, Espino is the owner of the Looking Glass Art Gallery in Hawley. In addition to exhibiting locally, in 2010 he was invited to exhibit at the Musée International d'Art Naif in Quebec, Canada, and will be showing his paintings at the Capitol building in Harrisburg during the month of October. Espino is also a Trustee and guest curator of the Howard Becker exhibit at the Wayne County Historical Society.
