A June 24 program at the one-room Bethel School in Berlin Township will feature Linda Dix Lee in a program entitled “Readin’, ‘Ritin,’ ‘Rithmetic and Chores,” reminiscences of growing up and going to school in rural Wayne County. Ms. Lee is a popular member of the Wayne County Historical Society’s Speakers Bureau, a trustee of the society and chair of the J. B. Park Farm Museum Committee. The open house runs from 1 to 4 pm, with the special program beginning at 2. Light refreshments will be served.

The Bethel School was built around 1870, closed for good in 1951 and left as it was on the last day of school with furniture and ambiance intact. In 1997 Wayne County’s commissioners, after making necessary repairs, gave the Wayne County Historical Society the go-ahead to open the school to visitors once a month during the summer as a pristine example of a one-room schoolhouse of the 19th and early 20th century. The open houses are scheduled for the last Sundays of June, July and August. On Sunday, July 29, Todd Miller will conduct a geography bee and on Sunday, August 26, the ever-popular spelling bee will be led by Ann Schweighofer.

From Route 6 in Indian Orchard, take Route 652 East for approximately one mile. Turn right on Bethel School Road at the former Indian Orchard Grange. Go one mile; Bethel School is on your left.
