Candidates for county offices were recently charged by the Wayne County Historical Society with "aspiring to be a public servant" and invited to "do time" in the Old Stone Jail. The candidates were sentenced to an hour in a jail cell in the 1859 building, and they and their supporters were asked to raise at least $100 "bail" to obtain their release. The event raised much needed funds for the Wayne County Historical Society and provided fun for the candidates and innocent bystanders as well.
The Wayne County Historical Society will again open in 2012 for free tours on the first Saturday of the warm weather months, thanks to the support of the Wayne County Commissioners. For more information about the jail and other programs and services offered by the Wayne County Historical Society, visit waynehistorypa.org, call 570-253-3240 or stop in at the main museum and research library at 810 Main St., Honesdale, from 10 am to 4 pm Wednesday through Saturday.
