Historic Wayne County churches, good food and the magnificent Northern Wayne autumn countryside make this year's Wayne County Historical Society Church Bus Tour on Saturday, October 10, one of the hottest tickets of the season. Several years ago, tour leader Gloria McCullough, WCHS's Research Librarian, led a highly popular walking tour of Honesdale churches; last year, she took a school bus full of eager travelers to churches in Damascus Township. For 2009, she has put together an itinerary that takes her group to eight churches in beautiful Northern Wayne County. Volunteers will be present at each of the churches to provide a history of the church and congregation and to point out any unique architectural features.

The bus will leave at 9 am sharp from the Honesdale Borough parking lot behind the Wayne County Historical Society at 810 Main St., Honesdale, and will stop at eight churches. Starting at the Bethany Presbyterian Church, built in the New England style by some of our earliest settlers and the oldest church building in the county, the bus will next stop at the White's Valley United Methodist Church. This church made a fascinating journey of its own, which Gloria will describe. Following White's Valley the bus will head for Orson and Lake Como, to visit their historic United Methodist churches. The group will then have lunch at the Shehawken United Methodist Church, and the visit will include a brief concert on their new organ. After lunch come visits to the Sherman Bible Chapel, birthplace of the Fresh Air Fund; the Body of Christ (formerly Methodist) church in Starrucca and the Starrucca Baptist Church, where at the end of the tour the group will enjoy a chicken and biscuit dinner.

Price for the bus tour is $35 for Wayne County Historical Society members and $37 for non-members and includes both lunch and dinner. Deadline for reservations is September 25. Reservations can be made at the historical society, 810 Main St., Honesdale, Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm or by mail, telephone, or email with credit card at PO Box 446, Honesdale, PA 18431, 570-253-3240 or wchshop@ptd.net For more information, contact Gloria McCullough at 570-253-3240 or wchspa@ptd.net.
