Press Release: Last 2009 Open House at Old Stone Jail

Old Stone Jail Entrance

The last open house of 2009 at Honesdale's Old Stone Jail is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, from 10 am to 1 pm. The jail, located between 10th Street and the Wayne County Court House, is celebrating its 150th birthday this year, and to commemorate the milestone the jail is the model for the Wayne County Historical Society's 2009 ornament. Visitors to the open house enjoy a free tour of the stone structure, which housed Wayne County's mischief-makers, burglars and murderers from 1859 to 1935 and is now maintained as a historic site by the Wayne County Commissioners and Wayne County Historical Society. The ornament is available for $17.50 plus tax during the open house and at the Wayne County Historical Society, 810 Main St., Honesdale, by phone or email with a credit card (570-253-3240 or wchshop@ptd.net) or at the WCHS website, waynehistorypa.org.
